The Internal Audit Unit of the KNUST has organized a two-day refresher course for its staff (Internal Auditors) on the theme: "The Internal Auditor in the 21st Century", to maximize efficiency at work, and to keep staff updated on modern trends in auditing. This, is the second of the Unit's annual workshop which commenced last year.
In his welcome address, the Acting Internal Auditor, Mr. Daniel Bart-Plange, described the theme as appropriate and carefully chosen considering that it would enhance the operations of internal auditors. He added that, the training is expected to focus on performance evaluation since that would expose the weaknesses and strengths of staff.
Delivering the keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor William O. Ellis, made reference to President John Evans Atta Mills' Declaration of 2011, "as an action year". Professor Ellis stated that, the Internal Audit Unit is expected to add value and improve the University's operations, hence, the need to organize in-house refresher courses to meet an appreciable standard.
Professor Ellis made a passionate appeal to the participants to disdain negative and unprofessional attitudes which hinder progress and efficiency at work. "We can achieve greater success if we eschew some negative attitudes", he stressed. He described internal auditors as important components in the scheme of the University's affairs, and admonished them to see themselves as such.
He commended the staff on their performance; suggesting that, the Unit should perform self-appraisal periodically; he, therefore, wished them a successful deliberation.
In a detailed presentation, the Acting Internal Auditor, Mr. Daniel Bart-Plange, touched on technical topics including: "Background to Internal Audit" and "Stores and Financial Regulations". He reiterated the importance for internal auditors to understand and acquaint themselves with the policies and procedures of the University. Adding that, it was imperative for internal auditors to live above reproach in order to achieve the goals of the Unit.
Mr. Bart-Plange explained "auditing" as an independent and objective activity which plays a vital role in realizing the mission and vision of an organization. He stressed that, auditing goes beyond the general perception of checking embezzlement of public funds. Mr. Bart-Plange urged his staff to report on issues and discard personal interests.
In a similar development, the Officer of KNUST Centre for Business Development (CBD), Mr. Ralph Nyadu-Addo, gave a presentation on the operations of the CBD as part of the programme outline. He described the CBD as the investment think tank of the University.
The in-house workshop was also graced by presence of the immediate past Internal Auditor, Mr. Francis Onuman and well attended by staff of the Internal Audit Unit.
